A representative of a Lompoc real estate agency formally donated dozens of new coats to Lompoc Unified School District this week with the winter-wear items designated to go to students who need them.
Connie Barlow, a real estate agent, presented the donation to the LUSD board of education Tuesday evening on behalf of Keller Williams Realty. The gift included 25 to 30 jackets, which were packed in bins. The estimated retail value of the donation was $1,100, according to LUSD staff.
Barlow said the agency came up with the idea for the donation in an effort to aid “the kids who are standing on the playground shivering.”
“We had hoped that we would get lots of donations from the community, but this was our first time, and as it turned out most of these came from the agents in the office,” she said. “We went out and bought them. We’re thrilled.”
Barlow said the agency would leave it up to LUSD leaders to decide who receives the coats.
District administrators and board members thanked Barlow for the donation and joined the audience at Tuesday’s meeting in applauding the move.
“We hope that we make a little bit of a difference in the lives of these kids,” Barlow said.
