Santa Maria Mexico boys U10 wins Orcutt Soccer Classic

The Santa Maria Valley Youth Soccer Association (SMVYA) Mexico boys under-10 All-Star team won the championship of last weekend’s Orcutt Classic All-Star Tournament.

Mexico outscored its opponents 32-0 while going 5-0 to win the tournament.

SMVYSA Mexico opened pool play on Saturday with a 7-0 win over the Orcutt United Soccer League Thunder. Mexico continued with a Saturday win over the Templeton All-Stars 5-0 and a 6-0 win Sunday over the Atascadero Aftershocks.  Mexico won its semifinal over the Atascadero Earthquakes 7-0 and, in the championship game, defeated the Templeton All-Stars again 7-0.

Mexico players are Juan Hernandez, Saul Ayuso, Arturo Ramirez, Anel Perez, Jair Delgado, Angel Guiterrez, Edgar Diaz, Rigo Zepeda, Salvador Uribe, Albert Martinez, Antonio Aguilera and Carlos Gudino. The coachs are Abel Guiterrez and Francisco Zepeda.

In other All-Star action the SMVYSA Lightning were also finalist in the Girls under-10 division.

Knights of Columbus free throw contest

The Knights of Columbus from St. Louis de Montfort are sponsoring their annual basketball free throw shooting championships on Saturday, Jan. 16, at St. Joseph High School.

The contest is free and open to all children ages 10-14. Proff of age, as of January 1, 2010, is required.

The competition — consisting of 15 free throw attempts — will be held in five age-group categories for both boys and girls.

The 10 local winners will then move on to regional competition.

Registration will be held between 9 and 10 a.m. on the day of the event with the competition to begin at 10.

Santa Maria offers 7-On-7 Outdoor Soccer League

The Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department is now taking registrations for its inaugural 7-on-7 Adult Outdoor Soccer League. 

The league is open to both men and women ages 18 years and over. 

Games will be held at Atkinson Park, Tuesdays through Thursdays. 

The fee is $252.00 for a City Resident Team and $315.00 for a Non-Resident Team.

Recreational and competitive Men’s, Women’s and Co-ed divisions are available. 

Registration takes place through January 7th at the Recreation and Parks Administration Office.
