The inaugural Ocean League soccer campaign is winding down, and three teams are still in the running for the league title.
Templeton stands in first place at 6-1 with three league games left. Santa Maria is 7-2. Orcutt Academy is 6-2.
Orcutt has broken the previous school record for girls soccer wins. Coach Brian Speer's squad is 19-2-4 overall this year.
Templeton and Orcutt Academy play their home games on natural grass, and both squads are still playing catch-up from earlier rainouts.
Templeton's Eagles are slated to finish their regular season with three games in three days, this Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. They will play against both of the other two title contenders
The Eagles will play Orcutt Academy at home Monday and Santa Maria at Santa Maria's Ralph Baldiviez Stadium Tuesday. Both games are slated for 6 p.m. starts.
Templeton split 1-0 scores against both teams. The Eagles beat Santa Maria and lost to Orcutt Academy.
Templeton is scheduled to finish its regular season Wednesday with a game against Mission Prep. The Royals are 1-7 in the Ocean League.
After winning three games total last year, Santa Maria's Saints will go into their regular season finale with a shot at the outright Ocean League championship.
Santa Maria has gotten the job done thanks mainly to a stellar defense.
The Saints have scored just 12 goals in league play. However, they have given up only six. Goalkeeper Sara Rodriguez has racked up five shutouts during her team's first Ocean League campaign.
For that matter, Rodriguez is in her first campaign with the Saints. She transferred to Santa Maria from Pioneer Valley after playing three years of varsity soccer there.
As stingy as the Santa Maria defense has been in league play, the Templeton defense has been even more miserly. The Eagles have allowed just three goals since their Ocean League campaign began.
The Orcutt defense has been pretty good itself. The Spartans have out-scored their league opponents by a combined 16-9.
Starters Jessica Gil, Sarah Barbosa and Reyna Ramirez have given the Saints solid defense in front of Rodriguez. Midfielder Brooke Stewart helps anchor the Orcutt defense. The Spartans have multiple reliable goalkeepers.
Both defenses will face multiple Templeton players who can score. Merran Grindley and Makaila Landes lead the Eagles' scoring. They have 19 goals apiece.
Emily Puita has tallied 15 times. Lindsay English has scored 13 goals. Siena Sagely has 12.
