Somehow, scoring two runs on two hits was working for the Saints Monday.
Until, suddenly, it wasn't.
Santa Maria led Santa Ynez 2-0 through six innings of a Los Padres League baseball game Monday afternoon.
Santa Ynez then rallied, scoring three runs in the top of the seventh to beat the Saints 3-2. The game was originally scheduled to be played Tuesday, but was moved up a day due to the impending rain.
Santa Maria senior Trevor Garcia was having a good day early on. He smashed a two-run home run in the bottom of the first inning to give the Saints an early lead.
Garcia and the Saints also shut out the Pirates for six innings.
Then came the seventh.
Garcia started the frame with a strikeout of Santa Ynez's Zach Hewitt.
Then the spark came in the form of a Ben Moore single, giving the Pirates life down two runs with two outs to work with.
Dante Berouty then drew a walk and Moore would score on single by Dustin Gregg.
Berouty and Gregg then scored on a ball hit by junior Cole Knightley to give the Pirates a 3-2 lead.
Daniel Atchinson, who threw a complete game for the Pirates, struck out the first two batters of the seventh and got a flyball to center to end the game.
Atchinson struck out 11 Saints on the day and allowed just the two hits: The homer to Garcia and a single by Tommy Herrera.
The Pirates finished with five hits, but only had three before the final inning. Garcia struck out seven Pirates. Garcia put out a possible Santa Ynez rally in the sixth, getting a strike out to end the inning and leave Santa Ynez with the bases loaded.
The Pirates stranded eight runners Monday.
It's the second LPL loss for the Saints where they had a late lead.
Last Tuesday, the Saints led Cabrillo 7-0 in the seventh before falling 9-7 in nine innings.
