Arroyo Grande beats field of Pac-8 teams

The Eagles golfers posted a team score of 230 to edge out San Luis Obispo by one one stroke in the first league tournament of the season. 

Arroyo Grande was led by a 39 from Vanessa Watkins. Her teammates scored: Delanie Dunkle 44, Kinsey McBryde 45, Emily Whitehead 51 and Madi Snow 51. 

Lisa Figueroa and Isabel Carpenter each shot a 43 to lead San Luis Obispo. 

Righetti High's Sarah Fouratt continued her strong sophomore season with a 36 to win the individual medal.

Westside Little League board elections

The Westside Little League board elections for the 2016 season will be held Oct. 8 from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Straw Hat Pizza.

The league encourages anyone interested to attend. 

Orcutt Academy seeks JV soccer coach

Orcutt Academy High School is seeking a boys junior varsity soccer coach.

Anyone interested can see Mary Dwyer in human resources in the Orcutt Union School District office located at 500 Dyer Road in Orcutt.

Swoosh clinics

Swoosh Basketball is holding clinics and practices every Tuesday and Thursday night from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Valley Christian Academy.

The sessions are for boys and girls ages third grade through high school. Nike, college and high school coaches are slated to be the instructors. The fee is $10 per session.

Elks Soccer Shoot

The Santa Maria Elks Lodge, Santa Maria Youth Soccer and Orcutt United Soccer Leagues will hold the annual Soccer Shoot on Saturdays, Sept. 19 and 26.

Competitors can choose either day to participate in this free event.

The Sept. 19 shoot will be behind Orcutt Academy High School, 610 Pinal and the Sept. 26 competition will be held at Adam Park on West Enos across from Minami Community Center.

Final winners will be determined at the Sept. 26 Shoot.

Registration begins at 9 a.m. each day with competition following immediately.

All children under the age of 14 are eligible to participate and must be accompanied by an adult. Age is calculated as of August 1, 2015.

There will be separate contests for boys and girls in four different age groups; 7-and-under, 8-9, 10-11 and 12-13 years.

The top three finishers in each age group will receive medals and a soccer ball presented to them at a dinner ceremony at the Elks Lodge, 1309 North Bradley.

There is no cost to take part and experience is not necessary.
