There was no scoring between Taft College and Hancock College baseball on Thursday during the first two innings.
But both teams combined for 24 runs from there.
In the end, Taft held on for a 15-9 victory at AHC to drop the Bulldogs’ record at 7-8 overall.
Hancock scored four times in the bottom of the fourth inning to take a 6-3 lead. But the Cougars would rally from there.
From the top of the fifth all the way to the ninth, Taft outscored Hancock 12-3 – beginning with a six-run outburst in the fifth.
Jake Shusterich led AHC with three hits and four RBIs. Ryan Pearce added two hits for AHC. Reed Odland drove two of his AHC teammates home for two RBIs.
Shusterich took the loss on the mound, striking out six Cougar batters but surrendering seven hits, seven runs and one home run.
Nine Taft hits, including a two-run Jake Pearson home run in the second inning and a Zach Jones solo shot in the seventh, were for extra bases.
All three of James McCallum's hits were doubles. Jones, Pearson and Javier Ramirez also had three hits for Taft.
Hancock used seven pitchers and only one, Izzy Hernandez who was pitcher No. 6, escaped without giving up a run. Hernandez worked a hitless eighth.
Hancock has now lost three in a row. The Bulldogs will travel to Taft for a 2 p.m. contest on Friday.
San Marcos 14, Lompoc 4
The Braves lost their first game of the season, plus first Channel League contest at LHS on Thursday.
No. 3 singles Anthony Morales defeated No. 1 Nora Ducet 6-3 and beat the Royals’ No. 3 Alex Wilson 6-1.

Lompoc’s No. 1 ace Kevin Hernandez took one set victory – over San Marcos No. 2 option Alexi Gill 6-3.
Lompoc returns home to face Santa Barbara for a 3 p.m. league contest.
Cabrillo 3, Orcutt Academy 0 (Wednesday night)
The Conquistadores improved to 3-1 overall by sweeping former Los Padres League rival Orcutt Academy. Set scores against the Spartans were 25-13, 25-21 and 25-16.
Chris Campos led the Conqs with six kills and four service aces. Brandon Shenefield delivered five kills and two service aces. Christian Montoya provided 11 assists.
Cabrillo will now take part in the Pioneer Valley Boys Volleyball Tournament set for Friday and Saturday.

San Marcos girls 132, Santa Ynez 54
The San Marcos Royals swept both sides of their swim meet Thursday at Santa Ynez High School.
Henry Allen, Jacob Thielst and the boys 200-meter freestyle relay team won their events for Santa Ynez.
Allen won the 200-meter freestyle in 1:52.77, Thielst won the 100 back in 1:03.85 and the foursome of Jake Healy, Thielst, Jace Grieco and Allen won the 200 free relay in 1:36.62.
On the girls side, Siena Lageman swam to the Pirates’ only victory, winning the 200 free in 2:19.98.
Santa Ynez is back in the pool next Thursday for a Channel League meet at Santa Barbara High School.
