BAKERSFIELD - Gabby Rincon and Kameah Tell of Righetti were the only two of seven area wrestlers who won in the first round of the CIF State Wrestling Tournament at Rabobank Arena.
Neither one made it to the championship quarterfinals. RIncon decisioned Ana Mercado of Chula Vista Eastlake 6-3 in the first round of the 111-pound weight class competition. Alexis Medina of Covina Northview scored an 11-1 major decision over Rincon in the second round.
Tell decisioned Dulce Chavez of Windsor 6-3 at 118 pounds then ran up against top seed Monica Garcia of Riverside Norte Vista in the second round. Garcia pinned Tell in 1:51.
Jisela Alvear, Mya Velasquez and Lizette Pompa of Pioneer Valley, along with Savannah Ruiz and Leila Martin of Nipomo, all lost in the first round.

Berlin Kidooo of Ramona scored a 9-0 major decision over Alvear at 106 pounds. Second-seeded Kelly Escamilla of Whittier California defeated Velasquez 5-1 at 126, and Paola Sarabia of Victorville Silverado pinned Lizette Pompa at the 1:22 mark of the third round.
Anna Baidar of El Dorado Hills Oak Ridge pinned Ruiz in 1:30 at 116 pounds. Diana Ventura of Redlands Citrus Valley racked up an 11-4 major decision over Martin at 150.
All of the area wrestlers will compete in the elimination bracket Friday. Rincon and Tell have a first-round bye.
Results from the first day of the boys tournament were unavailable. At press time five area wrestlers, including 152-pound CIF Central Section Masters champion Beni Banduenga of Righetti, were slated to compete.
Dominic Mendez of Righetti was scheduled to wrestle at 106 pounds. Teammate Matt Rodriguez was set to compete at 147. Francisco Alcantar of Nipomo qualified for the state tournament at 108 pounds, and Richie Sandoval of Santa Ynez got in at 120.
This marks the first year that the boys and girls state wrestling tournaments are being held concurrently in the same location. Both tournaments are slated to conclude Saturday.
