The announcement was made Wednesday by Mustang baseball coach Larry Lee and director of athletics Don Oberhelman. The signing period opened Wednesday and runs through August 1. The group includes three pitchers, one of whom might also play in the outfield, along with a catcher, a utility player and another outfielder.

In a normal year, the Mustangs would be preparing for a game against Portland State on Halloween, but they'll gladly settle for a two-hour practice. The Mustangs' fall 2020 season was postponed, with parts of it completely wiped out, by the coronavirus pandemic. The Big Sky Conference, of which Cal Poly is a member, announced in August that all sports would be postponed to the spring of 2021.

After what Hancock College Athletic Director Kim Ensing described as a time consuming, painstakingly careful process, Hancock student-athletes have resumed on-campus workouts in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Before they can begin (workouts), athletes have to complete a COVID-19 questionnaire and get a temperature check,” Ensing said.

Schlemer is the second nominee for the Santa Maria Times' Player of the Decade award for girls basketball, joining the first, Erin Jenkins of Cabrillo High. The list of nominees is compiled by the sports staff at the Times, Lompoc Record and Santa Ynez Valley News, which is polling current and former coaches and researching individual and team accolades. Players in graduating classes from 2010-2020 are eligible.
