Learn from the past, don't wallow in it

In response to a recent letter writer, I would think that most of today's society has acknowledged the facts about slavery, a dark time in our history. It was a horribly wrong thing to do to people, and it went on for way too long in this country. In others, it is still going on to some degree.

I agree that there is a lot of bigotry and prejudice going on in this country. I don't think the bigotry is ever going to end, many people dislike others that are different than they are. But, this country is still the No. 1 destination for immigrants in the world because of what it is possible to accomplish here. And generally, the people that hate, are not the people that have the influence to hold anyone back, because The American Dream is still possible. Look at the undocumented. They are motivated, they are working as hard as they can, I have no doubt that most of them will be successful.

People are going to stereotype others. The best thing to do, is not be the stereotype that they imagine you are. Learn from the past, but don't wallow in it.
