Critter Corner: Our many new birds are still with us and that make us so happy. They are so interesting to watch and to have around. Again, thanks to all who sent me information on them. I am still getting e-mail from many of you. Thanks, and please keep me posted on any new birds that you may have in your area. Little mama is still around and so is little girl. They were here just tonight -- our ever-watchful Ollie cat was on guard making sure they were okay as long as they were here on his watch. That is so cute to see, but he thinks he is their protector, and that is okay too. Before he came to live with us he would have chased them away, but after becoming our indoor cat he learned that those two were special and he was to watch out for them. He does a great job.

Hunger Awareness Day is today, Friday, from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. across San Luis Obispo County. The Food Bank relies on your support to make the campaign successful. This day is the Food Bank's largest one-day campaign aimed at raising awareness about hunger in our community and raising funds in support of the Food Bank's countywide programs. All donations stay in our local community and are used to provide food to low-income individuals and families who face hunger. They aim to provide food to assist all SLO County residents who often do not know where their next meal is coming from. Remember $1 provides $10 worth of nutritious food. You will find donation sights across SLO County. Additional information is available at SLOfoodbank.org

On a very sad note: John Kubiak, of Nipomo, passed away Monday, May 22. He was a very valuable volunteer in the community for over 30 years, and leader of the infamous Anonymous Barbecue Team, cooking for the various non-profits in Nipomo, local charities in SLO County, and for people in need. He was a humble man who never wanted recognition and was quite the prankster with friends, and coworkers. His memorial service will be held June 17 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Birchwood Garden Barn and Home in Olde Towne. The event will also be posted on Facebook.
