Eighty-five percent of the time, wind from Diablo flows toward Nipomo and Santa Maria. Currently, this plant stores 2,000 metric tons of highly radioactive nuclear waste onsite, with more being generated each day.

This plant was built atop earthquake faults, much like in Japan. As a responsible biologist concerned about the effect of radioactivity on DNA, I was arrested in front of Diablo 35 years ago. PG&E said they would have Yucca Mountain for their waste, which remains lethal for 250,000 years.

If more roofs were like mine, covered with photovoltaics, we wouldn't need Diablo. Why do we permit this plant to operate?
