The Santa Maria Police Department will be on the lookout for impaired and unlicensed drivers at a checkpoint from Friday at 6 p.m. to Saturday at 1 a.m.
The checkpoint will be set up on a roadway within city limits that is notorious for arrests and collisions involving drivers under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Officers will screen drivers passing through the checkpoint for sobriety and valid licenses. Those found to be under the influence will be arrested and unlicensed drivers will be cited and their vehicles will be impounded.
Funding for the checkpoints is provided from the California Office of Traffic Safety through the national Highway Transportation Safety Administration.
