Rotary District 5240, which includes 71 clubs, gave out nine awards in the District 5240 annual "4-Way Test" essay contest this month to three elementary school, three middle school and three high school students.

The Rotary Club of Santa Maria had three of those winners this year and presented the awards at Rotary Centennial Park on May 4.

The test aims to encourage students to consider how the "4-Way Test” can be used in everyday decision-making by expressing their thoughts in an essay that relates a case or story where they applied the principles in their daily life.

The principles apply to things we think, say or do:

Is it the truth?

Is it fair to all concerned?

Will it build good will and better friendships?

Will it be beneficial to all concerned?
