Central Coast Railroad Festival has added a first-time excursion to Santa Barbara aboard Amtrak’s Pacific Surfliner, shown rolling north along the California coast.


Central Coast Railroad Festival has added a special trip to Santa Barbara and a Saturday wine trip to its list of railroad excursions.

The first-time Pacific Surfliner Day Excursion from San Luis Obispo, Grover Beach and Guadalupe to Santa Barbara is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 20.

A private tour of Young America’s Foundation’s Reagan Ranch Center, located next to the Santa Barbara Amtrak station, shopping and complimentary wine tasting are included on the trip.

Participants will view the 30-minute film “Still Point in a Turning World,” which focuses on Ronald Reagan and his ranch, and will visit the center’s Multimedia Exhibit Gallery.

Young America’s Foundation, created in 1960 to introduce young people to Reagan’s conservative principles, also owns and maintains the Reagan Ranch about 20 miles north of Santa Barbara.

Tour participants will leave the Grover Beach Amtrak station at 7 a.m. and return at 8 p.m. The cost is $59.

The Railroad Festival is continuing its monthly Second Sunday Wine Rail Excursions, which offer guests a ride on Amtrak’s Coast Starlight up or down the Cuesta Grade.

Excursions include railroad history, a light lunch and visits to rail-related wineries.

A new Saturday Wine Rail Excursion set for Jan. 26 will start at D’Anbino Winery Tasting Room in the Paso Robles Amtrak station complex and will visit Pomar Junction Winery in the hills east of Templeton.

New Sunday excursions include a Feb. 10 trip that will include the D’Anbino Tasting Room and Pomar Junction Winery and a March 10 trip starting at Café Roma in San Luis Obispo and visiting a Paso Robles area winery.

Wine Rail Excursions are $59 for adults and $39 for children 15 and younger. Excursions are limited to 24 guests each and generally sell out in advance.

The fifth annual Central Coast Railroad Festival will celebrate rail’s history and future Oct. 10 through 14 at locations from Paso Robles to Lompoc.
