Multiple fire crews responded to a warehouse fire Monday in the 1200 block of West Stowell Road in Santa Maria.

The blaze broke out just after 3:30 p.m. in a 6,000-square-foot commercial building that was packed with pallets and cardboard boxes.

The metal structure and nearby buildings were evacuated as fire crews from Santa Maria and Santa Barbara County worked to fight the blaze and prevent the spread to nearby structures.

The city sent four engines, one truck and one air and light unit, Santa Maria spokesman Mark van de Kamp said.

Santa Maria police officers conducted the evacuations and performed traffic control. Access to Stowell Road west of the fire and east of Hanson Way was limited while crews were on scene.

AMR also sent an ambulance, although no injuries were reported, van de Kamp said.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by a fire marshal, and crews were expected to remain on scene throughout the night to mop up the fire.
