Twenty-five homes were briefly evacuated in Santa Maria on Friday evening after a traffic stop that led to what was termed by Santa Maria Police as a "fire/explosion hazard."

The evacuations on the 500 block of DeArmond Place were reported by SMPD via Twitter at 6:43 p.m., and residents were allowed to return home by 8:13 p.m.

According to news reports, the evacuations were carried out after some kind of drug lab was discovered in a residence on the street.

The lab, which was discovered after a traffic stop led to the seizure of 3 or 4 pounds of methamphetamine from a suspect, was thought to be a meth lab or honey oil lab, which is considered dangerous and potentially explosive. That discovery prompted the temporary evacuations.
