About 30 people gathered Saturday afternoon bonded by concerns and a desire to form an Occupy Santa Maria movement. A Facebook announcement of the gathering, held at the Santa Maria Public Library, urged participants to “bring your ideas, and passion for change so we can plan to occupy (the) Santa Maria financial district.

Shaun Meer created the Occupy Santa Maria group on Facebook “to see what people stood for and to see how far we can go.” Several people wanted to set dates to organize demonstrations and protests.

“We want to remind people that we are the 99 percent,” Josh Teran said as he addressed the crowd.

Meanwhile, in downtown Lompoc, activists armed with signs gathered Saturday afternoon at H Street and Ocean Avenue to participate in the national day of action.
