Snow peas were the big winner when Oceano Elementary School students picked out their favorite vegetables in a taste test during their lunch hours.

Vegetables donated by the Pismo Oceano Vegetable Exchange were tasted by kindergartners at 10:30 a.m. April 20, followed by first- through sixth-graders at noon.

“POVE donated some just beautiful vegetables,” said Christine Nelson, health education specialist for UC Cooperative Extension in San Luis Obispo.

After tasting spinach, snow peas and radishes, students were encouraged to vote for their favorite. When all the votes were tallied, snow peas came out on top.

“Some of them tasted radishes, and we actually got a few votes for them,” Nelson said.

UC Cooperative Extension will bring the Harvest of the Month program back to the school May 18, when the students will taste fresh fruit.
