Capps gets update on Lucia Mar’s TAP program

Congresswoman Lois Capps, left, speaks Monday with Lucia Mar Unified School District Superintendent Jim Hogeboom, Nipomo Elementary Principal Brett Gimlin, TAP master teachers Julie Bowles and Shanna Rowland.

Congresswoman Lois Capps visited Nipomo Elementary on Monday to hear a one-year update on implementation of the System for Teacher and Student Advancement Program (TAP) in the Lucia Mar Unified School District.

Lucia Mar Superintendent Jim Hogeboom, Nipomo Elementary Principal Brett Gimlin and teachers discussed accomplishments and challenges in the first year of implementing the program, as well as what changes lie ahead.

The district was awarded a $7.2 million federal Teacher Incentive Fund grant in September 2010 for TAP, which aims to improve teachers and student test scores through more frequent, structured teacher observations and by offering annual bonuses that average $3,000.
