A single-vehicle crash into a tree on southbound Highway 101 south of Donovan Road in Santa Maria left one person dead and two injured Sunday night.

The crash shortly after 5:30 p.m. also sparked a fire in a tree and surrounding vegetation, blanketing the freeway with smoke and backing up traffic.

Units from Santa Maria Fire Department extinguished the blaze and helped extract the injured from the vehicle.

Firefighters were able to remove two people from the vehicle. The third person was found dead in the car as it continued to burn.

The two people were transported to Marian Regional Hospital for treatment.

The California Highway Patrol is investigating the crash.
