2 teens severely injured

  • Updated

A Santa Maria man was booked for felony child endangerment Sunday after he apparently accidentally discharged a handgun and hit two young teenage boys, according to the Santa Maria police.

Mansa Evans, 35, was home with the two boys in the 600 block of East Central at about 10:30 a.m. and reportedly was reportedly showing them a handgun, but failed to clear the chamber of the weapon.

He inadvertently discharged the firearm one time at close range. The bullet struck the first boy in the face, causing substantial injuries, police said.

The bullet exited and struck the second boy in the neck and lodged in his vertebrae/spinal cord area, also causing significant injuries.

Both children were transported to hospitals out of the area for specialized medical treatment. One was airlifted.

Due to the age of both victims, no identifying information or further details of the incident will be released.
