The Santa Maria Police Department used a less-lethal projectile round to subdue a man accused of assaulting an officer on Friday after a Taser failed.
Police responded to a report of a naked man lying in the middle of the road near Main Street and Smith Street. The man, Michael Rodriguez, allegedly attacked a responding officer, punching him in the head and face.
After a Taser was unsuccessfully used, Rodriguez fled to a nearby apartment building, where he put on clothes and reemerged.
Police say Rodriguez did not comply with officer commands and was shot with with a sponge projectile.
He was booked into Santa Barbara County Jail.
