A Santa Barbara County sheriff’s custody deputy was reportedly injured Monday evening after being assaulted by an inmate.

The incident occurred around 7:30 p.m. at the Santa Barbara County Jail in Santa Barbara. The deputy, whose name was not released by the Sheriff’s Office, was removing 28-year-old inmate Thunderhawk Gutierrez, of Santa Maria, from a housing unit when Gutierrez allegedly attacked the deputy and punched him in the face. The deputy and another responding officer were eventually able to gain control of Gutierrez, the Sheriff’s Office reported.

The deputy was treated at a local hospital for his injuries and was expected to return to work soon, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said. Gutierrez was examined by medical staff and was reportedly uninjured.

The case, according to the Sheriff’s Office, will be forwarded to the Santa Barbara County District Attorney’s Office with the request that the following charges be filed against Gutierrez: battery on a peace officer, assault likely to cause great bodily injury, and obstructing/resisting an executive officer.
