A judge on Wednesday denied a request by Paul Flores in a decades-old civil case to extend a gag order prohibiting an Arroyo Grande attorney representing the parents of Kristin Smart, the Cal Poly freshman who went missing in 1996. 

San Luis Obispo County Superior Court Judge Ginger Garrett denied a July 1 request by Flores' attorney James Lemieux to prohibit attorney James Murphy, who represents Stan and Denise Smart, and anyone else connected to the civil case from making extrajudicial statements, according to court records. 

The order was for the civil case filed 

"Defendant's motion clearly attempts to abrogate the rights of free speech of myself my staff and my clients," Murphy wrote in an opposition filed July 6.
