Santa Maria man arrested on suspicion of vandalizing train
A Santa Maria man was arrested Sunday for allegedly vandalizing a train stopped along the tracks between Tank Farm Road and Industrial Way in San Luis Obispo.
Melquiedes Anastacio Rodriguez, 24, of Santa Maria, was arrested after a short foot pursuit that took officers and the suspect several blocks away from the railroad tracks, where police were called at 1:25 p.m. for reports of possible trespassers, according to the San Luis Obispo Police Department.
When officers arrived at the scene, they reportedly observed two males spray-painting the cars of the train. When additional officers arrived on scene and attempted to contact the men, the suspects ran in different directions, according to the Police Department.
After searching several nearby neighborhoods, an officer located Rodriguez several blocks away. The other suspect escaped.
Rodriguez was booked at San Luis Obispo County Jail on suspicion of vandalism greater than $400 and resisting arrest. His bail was set at $20,000.
Union Pacific Railroad has estimated that the replacement/repair cost to the train that was vandalized is more $10,000.
