A full parking lot was a good indication of the popularity of the June 26 senior dinner at the Buellton Senior Center. Sixty diners were treated to a Hitching Post II meal.
Dinner started out with a green salad, followed by a grilled pork chop that shared the plate with rice, veggies, mushrooms and garlic bread. Dessert was a flourless chocolate torte, topped with whipped cream.
Hitching Post II owner Frank Ostini was busy in the kitchen, with help from his wife Jami and longtime employee Angel Carmona. Also pitching in to make sure everything ran smoothly was Senior Center Executive Director, Pam Gnekow, along with her crew Rosa Castillo, Gracie Love, Linda Linton, Merrill Clayton, Wanda Nelson and Jim Nichols. Board member Bernice Small was at her usual post greeting and checking people in as they arrived.
After dinner Center board member David Schwartz announced possible upcoming trips to Santa Barbara to hear musical performances presented by the Community Arts Music Association. His wife Sue shared details about two upcoming events sponsored by the Friends of the Buellton Library: a Book Sale at the Buellton Bonanza on July 28 and an Oktoberfest on Oct. 6.
Gnekow shared the news that the Solvang City Council had granted the Center $7,500 to defray costs of taking Solvang residents to their medical appointments in the Valley and beyond, in the Center’s new medical van. She also commended new newsletter editor Irene Covington for creating the new, larger monthly newsletter.
To wrap up the evening, Gnekow and Nichols conducted the always popular raffle of gift certificates, and Frances Carricaburu led the group in a rousing rendition of “Happy Birthday” for a friend.
After dinner, a lively Bunko game ended the evening of good fun, good eats and good times.
