Ronald “Ron” Rodriguez, 76, of Santa Maria, CA passed away unexpectedly on January 30th. Ron was born in Los Angeles, California, September 20, 1941. He moved with his wife and children to Yorba Linda, California in 1971 and to Santa Maria in 2004.
After attending school in Los Angeles, Ron joined the U.S. Army at 17 years old. He served with the 82nd Airborne Division. Ron was a skilled truck driver, fence builder, welder and all around handy man.
He met his devoted wife Joyce Rodriguez shortly after serving in the Army. Ron and Joyce were close to celebrating their 54th wedding anniversary when he passed. They enjoyed many years together tent and RV camping. They both volunteered at the Elk's Rodeo in Santa Maria where they would camp the entire week to help out driving the shuttle, cooking and clean up, doing whatever was needed.
Ron loved archery and was the Range Master for the Santa Ynez Valley Bow and Pistol Club. Ron always enjoyed helping his neighbors however possible. He liked golf, and to play poker with friends at the Moose Lodge or the neighborhood club house. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends but a great amount of his time was spent building his renowned tinman art. Over the years Ron built nearly 900 recycled can tinmen that have been shipped all over the country. He created firefighters, soldiers, athletes, cowboys and cowgirls, all from tin cans.
Ron could talk to anyone, and was a friend to many, but he will be most remembered for his sense of humor. He loved to make people laugh. Most who knew him had his jokes memorized. At every family gathering he would always say “I haven't had anything to eat in three days!” He had more than one grandchild rolling their eyes and chuckling. Ron's children will never forget him waking them up early on Saturday mornings to watch Looney Tunes cartoons with him. His unique spirit for life will be missed.
Ron is survived by his wife Joyce Rodriguez. He is also survived by his daughters Terry DiMizio, Sharon Rodriguez-Calloway, Angela Jean Rodriguez-Kendrick; Son-in-Laws Andrew DiMizio, Michael Kendrick, Matt Calloway; grandchildren Marcus, Anthony, Jessica, Carson, Melissa and Matthew; great-grandchild Brody; sisters Christy and Michele; brother Lawrence; brother-in-laws Domingo and Tom.
Ron was preceded in death by his parents Ezekiel Rodriguez and Vera Simpson-Rodriguez; brother Jerry Rodriguez.
Ron's life will be celebrated quietly by his family. He will be remembered at the archery range and in our hearts.
