Richard E. Edens
1938 - 2017
Richard "Dick" Earl Edens, 78, of Santa Maria, Ca passed away on February 17, 2017. Dick was born in Portland, Oregon on July 15, 1938. He graduated from Boise High School in 1956. Dick's high school buddies were lifelong friends. He returned to Boise to visit these friends many times throughout his life. Dick's family moved to Santa Maria in 1962. After moving to Santa Maria, he earned an A.A. and an A.S. degree from Allan Hancock College.
Dick worked at Vandenberg Air Force Base for Lockheed for 10 years. He then worked as a Deputy in the main jail in Santa Barbara and proceeded to attend the Peace Officers Basic Training Academy. He graduated from the Academy in 1972 and continued to work for the Santa Barbara County Sheriff's Department for over 30 years. During those 30 years, Dick fulfilled many different roles for the Sherriff's Department. During the 1980's, Dick was the Zone III Trustee for the Peace Officers Research Association of California (PORAC). He also served on the Santa Barbara Sherriff's Association Board for many years.
Dick and his wife, Lorine, met at Lockheed at Vandenberg Air Force Base. They were married on June 30, 1963 and had two children, Dave and Danielle.
Dick loved working for the Sheriff's Department, taking photographs for family and friends, working on projects in his garage, and completing honey-do tasks around the house. He would never go out and buy something new without attempting to fix what he previously had numerous times. After retirement, Dick's favorite job was taking care of his grandchildren. He was the proud owner of "Grandpa's Taxi Service" and could often be found taking his grandchildren to and from school and practice. When he wasn't driving them around he was attending their games, performances, and school events. His family was his pride and joy and he loved any family event that brought them all together.
Dick is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorine Edens. He is also survived by his son David Edens and his wife Eileen; his daughter Danielle Rivera and her husband Mike; his brother John Edens; his sister Jan Escamilla; and his grandchildren Britney, Bradley, Bryce, Jessica and Emily.
Dick was preceded in death by parents, Grace Wooster DeHaan and Harvey John Edens, and his sister, Ruth Ann Peoples.
