Joy Arlene Hodgins Hollo, 91, passed away peacefully on December 26, 2017.
She was born on November 16, 1926 to Albert W. and Hazel E. Hodgins. She grew up in the small mining town of Mullan, Idaho with her two sisters and many cousins. After graduating high school, she and her older sister went to college at the University of Utah.
She married Robert A. Hollo in 1953. They moved to Santa Maria, both getting jobs as teachers in the elementary school district. She was a gifted educator teaching kindergarten and first grade for most of her 35 year plus career. She also served as a teacher on special assignment for the A.D.D. program and traveled to Australia in that capacity. After retiring she substitute taught for a time, had her own tutoring business, and helped her oldest daughter in her bookstore.
Joy was a devoted Christian Scientist. She loved the Lord and was a fine example of a Christian woman. She knew first-hand the power of prayer and God's love. She loved studying the Bible. She served the local church in many capacities.
She had many talents and hobbies. She was an excellent seamstress, making her own clothes as well as clothes for her daughters. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting, embroidery, crafts and gardening. She loved baking pies and cookies. She made many varieties of Christmas cookies each year to share with family and friends. She loved music. She played piano and organ and shared her talents at church. She enjoyed going to concerts, especially choir concerts her daughters sang in.
Family was very important to her. Most vacations involved visiting and spending time with family. She was a loving, supportive mother and grandmother. Her grandchildren always brought a smile to her face. She enjoyed time with them supporting school events, their interests and passing her hobbies on to them. Although she was not a sports fan, she was an avid fan of her grandchildren's sports teams and enjoyed time spent watching them play.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her sister L. Jean Hodgins, and her nephew Stan Barnard.
She is survived by her sister Alice H.
