Jay “Pops” Dugger peacefully went to be with the Lord on Friday, July 9, 2021, at the age of 65. His son Jay, daughter-in-law Desirae, and daughter Tameira were by his side. Jay was born in Torrance, California, on July 23, 1955; the youngest of 2 children born to Herb and Betty Dugger.
Jay moved to Springville, California, at the age of 14. At 18 years of age, he joined the US Army. He was honorably discharged later on. In 1977, he received his general contractors license. He started his own business, naming the company Dugger Construction. In 1990, he moved to the Central Coast and worked for Mike Bogle Construction. He went on to build hundreds of homes in the 5 Cities area. Around the mid 90s, Jay went to work for Glen Ellis Construction and built housing developments throughout Santa Maria, California, some of which are located in Hidden Pines and River Oaks. He accomplished all of this and more before joining the Carpenter's Union and finishing off his career at Maino Construction.
As a baseball dad, Jay loved coaching his son and all of the team players. He was actively involved in the baseball community for many years. He found great pleasure in passing down the torch to his son, Jay, (“JT”) who now coaches his own sons' baseball team. You would find Jay sitting in his chair, behind home plate, still coaching, cracking jokes, and telling his son (the coach) what he was doing wrong. Jay was a jokester and had a great sense of humor. He always had everyone laughing.
Jay is survived by his 4 children, including 3 daughters to his first marriage: daughter Kelleen Dugger, daughter Kristen and husband Michael Wolfe, and daughter Leanna Dugger; with his second marriage to Tammy Thomas: daughter Tameira Thomas, his son Jay and wife Desirae Dugger.
He was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren who called him Pops.
Jay is preceded in death by his older brother Keith and his parents Herb and Betty Dugger.
A celebration of life will be held on July 24, 2021 at 11:00 a.m. at Church For Life in Santa Maria. Pastor Albert Cruz will officiate. Reception to follow.
