Eleanor (Cross) McCashen, 86, of Santa Maria passed away peacefully at home on Wednesday February 28, 2018 after a lengthy illness.
Eleanor was born on July 12, 1931 in Union City, Pennsylvania to Donald Cross and Marion “LeBaron” Cross. Ellie excitedly talked about moving from their family farm in Pennsylvania to the big city of Denver Colorado and their travels by train with her family in 1944.
She graduated from Denver's South High School in 1949 which she described as a very large school in comparison to small school she left in Union City. After graduation she was part of the order fulfillment team for Montgomery Ward Mail Order in Denver where they worked wearing roller skates. She met the love of her life, Robert McCashen while working at Wards. They were married on December 1, 1950 and enjoyed over 62 loving years together.
Eleanor gave birth to her first two sons while living in Denver. Bob accepted a transfer with Martin Marietta to Vandenberg Air Force Base which brought them to Santa Maria. She gave birth to her second two children here in Santa Maria. She was an at home mom participating in PTA as well as working at Patterson Elementary for some time. She attended Allan Hancock College where she acquired her AA degree. She worked for Avis Rental Car for 20 years driving vehicles to and from different locations as well as scheduling the routes until she retired.
Eleanor had a joy for gardening, cooking and genealogy as well as weekly family gatherings. She truly loved planning trips for Bob and her to enjoy and scheduled two a year when Bob would accept to go on them. She enjoyed being a member of the Orcutt Christian Church until her illness prevented her from attending.
Ellie is survived by her son, David (Wendi) and their sons Ryan & Kevin; son Dale (Norma) and their children Joshua & Nicole (Rob Phelps); daughter Diane McCashen; her brother Norman (Audrey) Cross; sister-in-law's Carmen Cross and Veldean Cross as well as Bob's brother-in-law, Jim Godsey.
