Dennis M. Gummerman

Dennis M. Gummerman, 73, of Santa Maria passed away September 26, 2014. Dennis was born and raised in Redondo Beach, California. He was a lifelong hunter and avid fisherman. At the young age of 10 he built his own boat and would often sell his catch for the day to locals around the neighborhood. It was here his entrepreneurial adventure began.

Dennis graduated from Redondo Union High School in 1959. He was an average student and enjoyed participating in many sports throughout school years such as baseball, basketball and wrestling. His favorite sport was football, which he played on the offensive line at tackle and center. In his junior year, Redondo Union High School won the CIF Championship for football. Following high school, he continued his education at El Camino Junior College.

From 1959-1961 Dennis found his passion for cars and drag racing. He got started by racing cars for his friends for money, which ultimately allowed him to purchase a brand new 1959 El Camino. He toured the drag racing scene in his El Camino from San Bernardino County to Santa Barbara County where he won many races and received many trophies. It was in this venture that he found his true love, Patricia who he married in November of 1961.

Dennis and Patricia made Santa Maria, CA their lifelong home together. Dennis worked for many companies such as Getty Oil Company and PG&E in providing for his family. He attended Allan Hancock College to earn his Electrical Apprenticeship and in 1969 he began working as an electrical apprentice and joined the IBEW (International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers) local 413. Continuing on this path he worked for many of the local electrical contractors including Veatch Electric before he decided he would spread his entrepreneurial wings yet again. In the late 1970's he began studying for his electrical contractor's license. Ultimately receiving his Contractor's License in January 1982 he then formed T & G Electric, Inc., which he named after his daughters Teri and Gail. Dennis will receive his 45 year pin posthumously from IBEW local 413 on October 24, 2014. His family will be in attendance for his 45th year pin recognition.

Dennis had a great love for the outdoors and there was rarely a weekend that went by that he wasn't out hunting or fishing with family and friends. He was also involved with the creation of the Orcutt Youth Football League and Orcutt Girls Softball Association. If he wasn't out hunting or fishing he was at a football or baseball/softball game watching his grandchildren play. He had a great love for his dogs and was partial to smooth haired fox terriers.

Dennis married Patricia Tognetti of Santa Maria, CA in 1961. They raised three children together: Gary Wesley Gummerman (Sandra) of Santa Maria, CA; Teri Lynn Jobe (Jeff) of Paso Robles and Gail Ann Marcum (Scott) of San Luis Obispo, CA. Grandchildren include: Desirre Ann DeLorge (Ryan) of Ramstein, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany, Danielle Amber Patterson of Arroyo Grande, CA, Weston Michael Marcum 19 of San Luis Obispo, CA, Colton Scott Marcum 17 (Sabina) of San Luis Obispo, CA and Amanda Lynn Marcum 14 of San Luis Obispo, CA. They are also fortunate to have a few great-grandchildren: Joseph Thomas DeLorge 9 and Haylee Ann DeLorge 5.

Dennis passed comfortably at home in the presence of his loving family. He was preceded in death by his father Albert Gummerman and mother Donna V. Bertsch. He is survived by his younger brother Terry L. Gummerman of Santa Maria, CA.
