Hiking program offered for teens -- Youths in seventh through 12th grades are invited to join the city of Santa Maria's Summer Teen Trails Hiking Club, which "promotes positive relationships with peers, exploring new interests, and enhancing positive behavior while providing a safe environment for physical recreation," according to a spokesman.

The free scheduled hikes are on Tuesday, June 19, South Hills Trails, in San Luis Obispo; Tuesday, July 10, San Antonio Creek Trails, Santa Barbara; and Saturday, Aug. 18, Rattlesnake Flats Trail, Santa Barbara.

Participants will meet at the Maldonado Youth Center and depart at 9 a.m. Transportation to and from the hiking trails is free.

A waiver must be signed prior to each hike. Register online at www.cityofsantamaria.org/register, at the Recreation and Parks Department’s administrative office, at 615 S. McClelland St., from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday, or at the Maldonado Youth Center from 5 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Free Teen Arts Mentorship Program

The City of Santa Maria Recreation and Parks Department and The Arts Fund are offering a Free Teen Arts Mentorship Program for aspiring teen artists ages 13 to 18 this summer.

The program is six classes long and will focus on the art of printmaking. Classes will take place every Saturday, from Saturday, June 9th to Saturday, July 21st. Each class is from 11:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. at the Abel Maldonado Community Youth Center, 600 South McClelland Street. There is no class Saturday, July 14th.

Teens will have the opportunity to work with mentor Angelina LaPointe while exploring printmaking and how it connects to the worlds of graphic design, fine arts, book arts, and the students’ personal artistic interests. After learning a number of techniques each student will decide on one to create a large-scale print.

Angelina LaPointe is a Lompoc-native artist who works in a wide variety of creative media. She received her degree in Book Arts from the University of California, Santa Barbara College of Creative Studies, with a focus on the technique of block printing. In 2014 she founded Sidecar Press, a one-woman letterpress company.
