Child Abuse Listening Mediation has expanded its Trauma Informed Parenting Group into the Santa Ynez Valley, where it is meeting in Solvang once a week for two and a half months.

The group utilizes a curriculum developed for any caregiver — foster, kinship, guardian or adoptive — who is caring for children who may have been involved in the foster care system or are coping with separation from their family, a spokeswoman for CALM said.

She noted bringing children into a home, sometimes unexpectedly, can be daunting because children often bring along challenging behaviors, resulting from the traumas they have experienced that guardians are not prepared to address.

The Trauma Informed Parenting Group educates caregivers about the impact trauma can have on children’s development and behavior as well as ways to appropriately respond to their behavioral and emotional challenges.

The group launched Jan. 10 and will continue to meet Tuesday evenings through March 21 at the Santa Ynez Valley Presbyterian Church, which donated the meeting space.

CALM was founded in 1970 to reach stressed parents before they hurt their children and is the only nonprofit agency in Santa Barbara County focusing solely on preventing, assessing and treating child abuse and family violence.
