Paint retailers in Santa Maria and Lompoc are participating in a new state program to take back leftover paint from household and commercial consumers.
Santa Maria retailers participating in the program are Glidden Professional, 721 S. Miller St., which can be reached by calling 928-2337, and Kelly Moore, 1760 S. Broadway, which can be reached at 348-1617.
In Lompoc, unused paint can be returned at Sherwin-Williams, 137 W. Central Ave. The company can be reached by calling 742-0214.
Through the American Coatings Association, paint manufacturers created PaintCare, a nonprofit organization that will arrange for recycling and proper disposal of unused paint, a state official said.
Funding for the program will come from a recovery fee, based on container size, to be charged when consumers purchase paint.
Fees will be 35 cents for half a pint up to a gallon, 75 cents for a gallon, $1.60 for more than a gallon to five gallons. No fee will be charged for containers of half a pint or less.
