Pastor’s Corner
Nevertheless

By Pastor Carl Nielsen
Bethel Lutheran Church

“Why?” “How could God permit…?” These
questions are all too familiar to us when our lives
run into rough spots or are married with tragedy.
They are natural questions. They may even be
legitimate questions. Unfortunately, though, they
are usually unanswerable questions.
Who can figure out why this or that had to
happen? Who can probe the mind of God to
understand how God could permit certain
events to occur? As Moses and Job and so many
other people of faith discovered in the past,
the why’s and how’s of God are beyond human
understanding. We can only guess, and quite
probably our guesses are not all that good.
Nevertheless, even if we cannot know the why’s
and how’s of our human suffering, there is one
thing we can know that will help. We can know
that no matter what we have to endure. God is
right down there in it with us. In Jesus, God has
already suffered all that human beings can suffer.
Furthermore, God assures us that because of Jesus’
suffering our suffering cannot ultimately destroy
us. Jesus’ redemptive suffering destroyed all the
barriers between God and us so that “nothing in
all creation can separate us from the love of God.”
(Romans 8:39)
Most comforting of all, not only has God suffered
for us, not only has God given meaning to our
suffering, but God is with us even now in the
midst of our suffering, offering us the strength
of courage we need to handle it. So, while we
may not get pat answers to our questions, we get
something far better: a Savior to meet our deepest
needs!

Instructional Wisdom from God
2Thessalonians 2:16-17: “Now our Lord Jesus
Christ himself, and God, even our Father, which hath
loved us, and hath given us everlasting consolation
and good hope through grace, Comfort your hearts,
and stablish you in every good word and work.”
