Pastor’s Corner
Good Friday

By Pastor Carl Nielsen
Bethel Lutheran Church

The future was bleak for France when King
Charles sent for the girl who heard voices from
heaven. When Joan of Arc came to the palace,
Charles had changed places with another. Joan
glanced at the man on the throne, but went to
Charles who was standing among those gathered
in the king’s court. She had never seen him, but
she recognized the king.
No one recognized King Jesus. Indeed, it would
have taken a miracle. He was bruised and
beaten and nailed to a cross. What kind of king
could He be? No one would have dreamed that
this pathetic sight was God’s way of dealing with
the sin of the world. That righteous sufferer has
made many to be righteous before God. C.S.
Lewis said that reality is usually what you would
not have expected. That is why he believed the
gospel. How unexpected! How real!
To remember this amazing day when God
paid the price for the sins of all people in the
world, the Pastors Network will be hosting a
Community Good Friday worship service at
First Christian Church April 19 beginning at
noon. The church is located at 1550 College
Drive in Santa Maria. There will be wonderful
music and a feast of preaching on the theme of
The Seven Last Words from the Cross. From
the Gospels we have seven statements Jesus
spoke while on the cross. “Father, forgive
them, for they know not what they do.” “Truly
I say to you, today you will be with me in
Paradise.” “Woman, behold your son!...Behold
your mother.” “My God, my God, why have
you forsaken me?” “I thirst.” “It is finished.”
“Father, into your hands I commend my spirit.”
Come and hear seven different preachers declare
God’s Word and leave with a grateful heart for
what God endured and did for us. See you
