Six area boys teams and four local girls squads will compete at the CIF Southern Section Cross Country Preliminaries at the Riverside City Cross Country Course.

Mackenzie Webb of Orcutt Academy will also race, in Girls Division 5. She qualified as an individual at the Los Padres League Finals.

The divisional prelims take place Friday and Saturday. A total of 24 boys and girls teams in each division will advance to the sectional finals which will take place Nov. 18 at the Riverside City course.

The Santa Maria boys will start the racing off for the locals. The Los Padres League champions will race in heat one of Boys Division 1 at 10:04 a..m. Friday. Cesar Ayuso, the third-place finisher at the LPL Finals, will lead the Saints into this one.

The Lompoc boys will run at 11:39 a.m. that day in heat one of Boys Division 3. The other locals will race on Saturday.

In divisions with two heats, the top 12 teams from each heat will advance. In divisions with three heats, the top eight from each heat will advance. Individuals representing teams that do not advance will move on if they finish high enough in their respective races.

The Cabrillo girls and boys will both race in Division 4 Saturday. The Cabrillo girls will race at 7:45 a.m., the first race of the day Saturday. All of the area girls teams, plus Webb, will compete in divisions that have two heats.

The Santa Maria, Lompoc and St. Joseph boys will race in divisions that have three heats. The Lompoc, Cabrillo and Nipomo boys will run in divisions that have two heats.

The Nipomo and Cabrillo boys squads will both race at 8:41 a.m. Saturday in heat one of Division 4. Nipomo's Devin Diaz and Joe Gocke went one-two at the LPL Finals.

The Arroyo Grande girls and boys will race in Division 2. The girls will race at 10:46 a.m., and the boys will race 50 minutes later.

The St. Joseph girls and boys earned at-large bids into Division 5. The girls will race at 9:05 a.m. The boys will run at 10:16 a.m. Joseph Domingues Jr. won several races this year, and he finished third at the PAC 8 League Finals. He will lead the St. Joseph boys into the divisional prelims.

Webb earned her way into the Division 5 preliminaries with a fifth-place finish at the LPL Finals. She will run at 10:16 a.m. in heat two Saturday.
