CLOVIS — Haleigh Batty accomplished what she wanted to accomplish at the CIF State Track and Field Championships Friday.
She wasn't looking for anything flashy, the Cabrillo senior said afterward, just a solid enough jump to advance to the finals.
Batty qualified eighth in the Girls long jump with a best of 18 feet, 10.25 inches in the preliminaries at Buchanan High School. The top 12 moved on to the finals, which will take place at Buchanan Saturday.
"I just wanted to get in a good enough jump to qualify, just like at the (CIF Southern Section) Masters Meet," last week, said Batty.
"I got done what I wanted to get done."
Seniors Erica Schroeder of San Marcos and Ban Taylor of Arroyo Grande also advanced, Schroeder in the Girls 800 meters and Taylor in the Boys 1,600. Both got through on time.
Schroeder finished fourth in her heat, in 2 minutes, 11.17 seconds. Taylor finished sixth in his, in 4:18.02.
The top four finishers in Taylor's heat all ran under 4:15.
Schroeder is in her third state meet, and she won the 800 championship as a sophomore. Batty and Taylor are in the state meet for the first time.
Batty's series of jumps went 18-9, 18-3.75, 18-10.25. She has jumped more than 19 feet multiple times, and she won at the Los Padres League Finals with a personal best of 19-8.5.
Batty won the Division 3 championship at the CIF Southern Section Finals.
She said she was pleasantly surprised with her eighth qualifying spot Friday.
"I was pretty pleased with that," she said. "I was expecting to qualify something like 12th.
"There wasn't much wind, but it was really hot, 90-95. The heat was similar to that at the (sectional) finals."
Field events will start at 4:30 p.m. Saturday. Running events will start at 6 p.m.
