After having stellar campaigns in 2015 and 2016, the U13 Santa Ynez Kickers are doing just as well in 2017.
Combining both years Chris Chirgwin coached the team, in 2015 and 2016, their combined fall league record was 20-1-5, with 71 goals scored and eight goals against them.
In the summer of 2016, the Kickers competed in four tournaments throughout California and made it to the championship game four times.
"We won two championships," Chirgwin said.
The Kickers' top goal-scorer this fall league season was Alina Terrones.
In 2017, the Kickers are now playing in the State Cup, which began Feb. 11 in San Diego.
"We competed in the largest soccer tournament in California this weekend – the State Cup – and went undefeated in the first round," Chirgwin said in an email to the Valley News. "We advance to the second round (32 teams remaining) this weekend in San Diego."
The squad features 18 girls from the Santa Ynez Valley, Lompoc and Orcutt.
"We train year-round and compete in league and tournaments all over the Western U.S.," Chirgwin said. "We have taken first place in league each year, our league includes Camarillo, Oxnard, Ventura, Santa Barbara, SLO and Santa Maria. We have also competed well in tournaments and have defeated several of the top teams from much larger regions, Los Angeles, Phoenix, Sacramento, etc."
Chirgwin said the team's small-town origin hasn't hampered its performance one bit.
"We are from a relatively small region, but this group of hard-working and dedicated girls have accomplished a lot over the past two years," he said.
The Kickers' roster consists of goalie Indigo Akers-Roberts and field players Rylee Fox, Kennah Shaffer, Claire Chirgwin, Eme Tate, Leila Pule, Lili Jones, Irene Castaneda, Amelia Villa, Leslie Ramirez, Alina Terrones, Ana Delgado, Cali Grieco, Dakota Blunt, Briana Rodriguez, Emmy Withrow, Xiomara Mejia and Peyton Lishman.
