Santa Ynez, which plays in the smaller Los Padres League, already had a win over a PAC 8 League team before the Pirates played on Saturday.

The Pirates (2-4) made it two wins over PAC 8 squads when they beat St. Joseph (1-7) 45-39 in a St. Joseph/Righetti Holiday Tournament game at St. Joseph's Hofschulte Gym.

St. Joseph girls basketball coach Ed Torres worked with Righetti coach Desiree Hitch last week to put the tournament together after the Thomas fire cancelled the Tournament of Champions that both teams were to play in. The tourney had been scheduled to take place in Santa Barbara.

The St. Joseph/Righetti tournament ran Thursday-through-Saturday. The tourney took place at both schools.

The Pirates suffered through a miserable fourth quarter on offense Saturday, but they hung on after taking a 40-29 lead into the fourth.

Grace Padilla had another huge rebounding game for the Pirates (16 in the previous Santa Ynez game and 11 in the first half alone against the Knights), and she hit a big 3-pointer to put Santa Ynez ahead 44-34 at the 2:09 mark of the fourth quarter.

Padilla had Santa Ynez's only field goal in the fourth, but the Pirates managed to stave off the Knights.

Sam Brackett scored a game-high 20 points for St. Joseph, and she pulled the Knights within 45-39 by making two free throws with 24.8 seconds left. Those were the last points of the game, though.

Padilla led the Pirates with 13 points. She made two 3-pointers. Ashley Quiroga scored 10 of her 12 points for Santa Ynez in the first half. The Pirates led 28-18 at halftime after taking a 14-5 lead into the second quarter.

Malia Loos scored nine points for Santa Ynez, all on three-pointers. Maddie Miller scored seven of her nine points for St. Joseph in the first half.

Lita Wright, Santa Ynez's scoring leader last season, finished with seven points.

Santa Ynez seemed to have the game well in hand when Kaelie Kraft made the second of her two free throws to put the Pirates ahead 40-29 with 3:25 left in the third quarter. However, Brackett gave the Knights some momentum when she buried a '3' for the last points of the quarter.

Brackett made another '3' for the first points of the fourth, but St. Joseph couldn't score consistently enough to tie or take the lead.

With the score 40-34, Padilla made a free throw at the 3:18 mark for Santa Ynez's first point of the fourth quarter. However, St. Joseph scored on just three possessions afterward.

Santa Ynez is off until the Pirates play at 6:30 p.m. Jan. 3 at Nipomo in a Los Padres League game. St. Joseph will play San Jose Leigh at 8 p.m. Friday night at the Del Mar Holiday Classic.
