Some of the same guys who helped lead the Dunn boys soccer team to the CIF Southern Section Division 7 championship in 2015 will try to help the Earwigs to the Division 6 championship Saturday.
Attackers Dennis Cole, Rodney Michael and Peter Kargbo were part of the core of the Dunn team that edged Laguna Blanca 2-1 for the 2015 Division 7 championship. They will try to help the Earwigs to the Division 6 title Saturday.
Dunn (14-1-1) will play Adelanto (10-3-7) for the Division 6 crown at 12 p.m. at Corona High School.
The Los Olivos-based Earwigs topped La Canada 4-1 on penalty kicks in the semifinals at Dunn Tuesday to get to the Division 6 championship game. The game was scoreless going into the penalty kicks phase.
Mark Geriak coached the Earwigs to the Division 7 championship in 2015, and he is Dunn's coach this year.
The Spartans got to the semis against Dunn by beating overall top seed La Puente Nogales 5-3 on penalty kicks in the quarterfinals. That game was also scoreless going into the penalty kicks phase.
Dunn and Adelanto both won league championships this year. The Earwigs took the Condor League crown. The Saints earned the Desert Sky League title.
Adelanto upset second-ranked Fillmore 4-3 in the quarterfinals and then won 4-3 again, over Brentwood in the semis, to get to the championship game.
Musa Yansaneth helps anchor a Dunn defense that has allowed a total of three goals (not counting the penalty kicks phase) in the Earwigs' four playoff games this year.
That defense is going to have to deal with Adelanto senior Peter Arellano. Arellano has racked up a total of 20 goals in the 15 games he has played in.
Sahid Conteh scored the winning goal for the Earwigs in the 2015 Division 7 title game. Shannon Carroll, a standout pitcher for the Dunn baseball team, was the goalkeeper, and a capable one.
They have both graduated, but Dunn has a solid goalkeeper this year, 16-year-old freshman Brima Kamara who is a native of Sierra Leone.
Kamara stopped two of La Canada's three tries in the penalty kicks phase. All four of Dunn's shooters in the penalty kicks phase, Yansaneth, Kargbo, Frank Darama and Cole, scored.
Dunn will try Saturday to become the second Santa Ynez Valley team this year to win a sectional divisional championship. Santa Ynez's girls water polo team beat Diamond Bar 8-6 in overtime last Saturday at the Woollett Aquatics Center in Irvine to win the Division 7 title.
