Righetti wins its sixth straight PAC-7 girls golf championship Thursday at Cypress Ridge
On the final hole of Thursday's PAC-7 girls golf finals, the league championship was already in the hands of Righetti, but the race for the day's medalist and eventual league MVP was still up for grabs.
At the Cypress Ridge Golf Course, Righetti's Makayla Mier and Mareon Smit went one-two on the afternoon to lead the Warriors to their sixth straight PAC-7 League Championship.
Mier, playing in the lead group, and Smit, just trailing in the second foursome, needed up until the final hole to decide the day's low golfer.
Shooting an eighteen-hole score of 79, Mier edged Smit by just a single stroke to claim her third straight league MVP title.
"This year has been difficult getting through some stuff, but it was a good season and now I'm ready for CIF," Mier said.
Following Mier's MVP award, Righetti had three other first team all-league recipients. Smit (80), Dani O'Keefe (82) and Kelsey Nolan (88) all placed within the top seven to receive the league honors. Haley Davis was the fifth scorer for the Warriors with a 104.
"They're a pretty solid team - they're consistent and play solid golf on a regular basis," Righetti head coach Tracy Davis said.
Despite six straight league championships, Davis places a lot of the Righetti's success on the strength of the area's youth program.
"I think that we have had some good juniors come in which helps feed the program and luckily our area is feeding our high school with some quality golfers," Davis said.
Righetti's total team score of 433 bested that of second place Arroyo Grande by 43 strokes.
The Eagles, led by Christina Hansson's 82, finished one of the program's all-time best seasons - which included the school's first league tournament victory.
"This was the best representation of golfers for Arroyo Grande High," Arroyo Grande head coach Claudia Souder said. "The team had the best nine hole average, they recorded a record in team nine-holes and it's just a wonderful group of girls - and there is more to go next week and we're excited for that."
Both the Warriors and Eagles qualified for next Thursday's CIF Northern Regional, also at Cypress Ridge.
Karissa Mattimoe and Alex Anderson each shot a 96 while Sydney Johnson and Ashley Roese both shot 101 to round out the Eagles' top five.
With the Warriors and Eagles playing at the top of their game heading into the postseason, coach Davis is looking for a possible run to the CIF Finals.
"They had a really good start to the season, then we had a little dip, but now they're starting to peak at the right time, hopefully for CIF," Davis said. "They have the potential to go on and do good things and we've been fifth the last couple of years at CIF, so it would be nice to be in the top four and move on to finals."
Coming in third on the day was San Luis Obispo, led by their first team all-league recipient Alessia Weckenmann's 84. Following SLO was Paso Robles in fourth and Atascadero in fifth.
Nipomo, in sixth, had a good showing from Sara Clark (103) and Ashley Gonzales (106). Pioneer Valley's Jen Velasquez shot a 110 on the day to lead that Panthers to round out a terrific afternoon for Santa Maria Valley golf.
