Hancock College's football team plays its regular season home finale tonight.

The Bulldogs have to have a win.

Hancock (3-1 Northern Division, 7-1 overall) hosts Glendale (0-3, 3-4) at 6 p.m. at Righetti High School's Warrior Stadium. Those wearing a Halloween costume to the game will be admitted free.

Hancock needs to win tonight to have a chance to earn a share of the division championship. The Bulldogs finish their regular season with a 7 p.m. game at Ventura next week. These next two games figure to be crucial when it comes to Hancock's state playoff aspirations.

Tonight's game will be webcast, audio only, at www.santamariatimes.com. Brad Memberto and Irvin Kiger will call the action. The pre-game show starts at 5:45.

Glendale has been competitive in most of its Northern Division losses, including a 14-6 loss to Ventura (3-0 in the Northern Division). However, first-place Bakersfield (4-0 Northern Division) gave the Vaqueros a 52-14 beating last week.

The Bulldogs rolled into the game tonight by trouncing winless Moorpark 62-28 on the road last week.

Coach Kris Dutra's Hancock team is seventh in Southern California and 10th statewide in the latest California Community College Football Coaches Association polls. Bakersfield is sixth and ninth respectively. Ventura is 10th and 15th.

Dutra's squad has a state leader. Nipomo native Mike Trujillo took over the top spot among California junior college punters last week. Trujillo's averaging 42.16 yards per punt for his 37 punts.

Glendale sports a tough defense. The Vaqueros give up just 276 yards of total offense a game. The unit will collide with a Hancock offense that averages 419 yards an outing, 14th best in the state. Glendale is 12th-best among state defenses in yards allowed.

Pioneer Valley graduate Tyler Vogt helps anchor an offensive line that has helped Hancock's backs run for a total of 1,887 yards. That's best in the division and second-best in the state behind San Mateo (2,103 yards).

Ryan Anglin leads Hancock's rushing attack with 662 yards. Thomas Sua has 417, on just 79 carries. Sua has 10 rushing touchdowns. Both are St. Joseph graduates.

Hancock's defense, anchored by linebackers Brennan Locker and Isiah Anderson, has had a good year. The unit has given up 323 yards a game.

Glendale doesn't have a passer or receiver among the state leaders, but the Vaqueros have 1,095 yards passing this year. Glendale has 1,033 yards rushing. Jorge Chaidez (98 carries, 463 yards, two touchdowns) is Glendale's rushing leader.

Hancock's passing attack has some playmakers. Quarterback Gunnar Jespersen is ninth statewide in pass rating, at 158.7. He's 83-for-147 for 1,311 yards, 14 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He's also a dangerous runner.

The Bulldogs have two receivers among the state's top 50, Marquelo Suel and Scott Cathcart.

Though the Vaqueros have had a rough time in divisional play, the pollsters thought enough of them to put them 18th in Southern California and among the others included in the statewide poll outside that one's top 25.

Hancock averages more than 100 yards a game in penalties. So far, that hasn't hurt the Bulldogs.
