Hail to the champions - the Babe Ruth District 6 13-Year-Old division champions, that is.
Orcutt needed to win twice Saturday to capture the district title. Orcutt's guys got the job done rather emphatically, defeating Lompoc 8-4 and 11-1.
Orcutt advances to the state tournament in Madera which starts July 15.
Hail to the runners-up, too. Lompoc's players earned the right to play in the state tournament by finishing second in the seven-team district tourney. Well-played by both teams.
Stephanie Brown Trafton sighting: The 2011 women's discus national champion finished fourth in a Samsung Diamond League meet in Switzerland and won a meet in Albertville, France Friday with a throw of 60.55 meters. The Arroyo Grande High School and Cal Poly graduated competed in another European meet Saturday. Her result was not known as of this posting.
Final Four fields taking shape: The partial Final Four fields for the various Little League District 65 All-Star Tournaments, according to the league's website, look like this so far.
9-10: Northern Division seed number one: Santa Maria Northside. Southern Division seed number one:Santa Maria Southside. Southern Division seed number two: Orcutt American.
10-11: Northern Division seed number one: Northside. Southern Division seed number one: Lompoc American. Northern seed number two: Atascadero.
11-12: Northern Division seed number one: Northside. Southern Division seed number one: Orcutt National.
Congratulations to all these teams. They've put in a lot of hard work and are reaping the well-deserved reward.
A request to Little League parents: Could some of you tone down the enthusiasm when a player on the opposing team makes an error? These guys aren't even teen-agers yet.
Just a request. Overall, the sportsmanship in the stands, at least in the games I've seen, has been pretty good.
RE the state of U.S. American soccer: It seems to be just fine. The Americans are rolling through their group and have already assured themselves a spot in the knockout round.
RE the state of American professional tennis: At least we still have the Bryans.
