MOORPARK - Moorpark College's football team was a huge underdog against Hancock College's squad Saturday night. The winless Raiders knew they couldn't afford to turn the ball over.
They did. Three times in the last half of the second quarter alone. Hancock capitalized all three times.
Joshua Morris intercepted a pass, then Thomas Sua capped a 57-yard drive with a 1-yard scoring run. Reggie Williams and Anthony Johnson blocked a punt. Gunnar Jespersen hit Marquelo Suel for a 15-yard touchdown pass on the next play. Morris picked off a pass on the next play from scrimmage and ran 50 yards for a score.
The Bulldogs were up 35-7 after all that. They went on to rout the Raiders 62-28.
Hancock didn't come close to tripping up as the 2007 Bulldogs squad did in a loss at previously winless Compton. Instead, it ran its record to 3-1 in the Northern Division and 7-1 overall. Moorpark is 0-4, 0-8.
The Bulldogs kept their drive for a division title alive. They also stayed on track in their quest for a berth in the playoffs. Hancock hosts division rival Glendale at 6 p.m. next Saturday in its regular season home finale.
There will be a live webcast of the game, audio only, at www.santamariatimes.com. Brad Memberto and Irvin Kiger will call the action. All those wearing a Halloween costume to the game will be admitted free.
The Bulldogs backups got a lot of playing time in the second half at Moorpark, and they took advantage of it.
Reserve quarterback Greg Draper scored on a 2-yard run. Tailback Chauncy Gordon (he usually plays fullback when he's in) went in from four yards out. Aaron Quintanilla, who had a total of three carries and no yards before the game started, scored the last touchdown from 37 yards out on a tackle busting run.
Hancock quarterback Gunnar Jespersen threw three touchdown passes to Marquelo Suel before the Bulldogs starters on offense retired for the night. The last was a 60-yarder on the second play of the third quarter. That made it 41-7.
The teams traded scores for the most part after that. Moorpark quarterback Ian Shultis threw three touchdown passes after halftime against a mixture of Hancock starters and reserves. He threw four TD passes in the game.
The Raiders hung with the Bulldogs pretty well early. Then their turnover debacle started.
Hancock season rushing leader Ryan Anglin did a lot of the work. Then Jespersen scored from three yards out to finish an eight-play drive after the opening kickoff.
Shultis answered for the Raiders by throwing a six-yard touchdown pass to Justin Bradley. The Bulldogs went ahead for good on Jespersen's seven-yard touchdown toss to Suel with 1:34 left in the first quarter.
Anglin gained 101 yards on nine carries, all in the first half. Morris intercepted another pass in the second half, giving him a hat trick for the game.
Moorpark's defense came in giving up an average of 506 yards a game. The unit didn't hold up very well Saturday night.
The Bulldogs racked up 489 yards of total offense. Jespersen was an efficient 8-for-11 for 154 yards with no interceptions.
The Raiders averaged 60 yards rushing a game going in. Moorpark had just 40 yards on the ground Saturday night.
