"I/m not used to being on the other end of one of these," Righetti boys tennis coach John St. John said Wednesday.
He was talking about a shutout. Usually if there was a tennis blanking taking place, St. John/s team was doing the blanking. This time a veteran Dos Pueblos team shut out St. John/s younger squad 18-0 on the Righetti courts in a non-league match.
"(The Dos Pueblos coach) said he has eight seniors," St. John said.
As for his own club, "I lost a lot of seniors," from the team that finished third in the PAC-5 League last year, said St. John. "I have four seniors this year. The rest are sophomores and juniors."
The Chargers squared their record at 1-1. Righetti is 1-4 overall. San Luis Obispo defeated the Warriors Tuesday in Righetti/s PAC-5 opener.
"They/re going to win the league," St. John said of San Luis Obispo. "They have two singles players who I think will meet in the PAC-5 finals, and they have two very good doubles teams."
Along with losing players to graduation, St. John does not have sophomore Stefan Hardy this year. After blasting his way through to the inaugural PAC-5 League boys singles championship last year, Hardy, St. John said, opted to play in high profile individual tournaments this spring.
Righetti players came close in three sets Wednesday but could not grab any of them.
Ervin Cruz and Jason Anderson, Righetti/s No. 3 doubles team, went to a tiebreaker against the Chargers/ No. 3 pair of Sam Anderson and Ronak Chang, but Anderson and Chang prevailed 7-6 (9-7).
Tim Rapson and Kevin Holst, Righetti/s No. 2 pair, rallied from 6-5 down to force a tiebreaker. However Anderson and Chang came through again, 7-6 (7-2).
Lee Medvedoff, Righetti/s No. 3 singles player, led Russell Williams 5-4, on serve. Medvedoff fought off two set points, but Williams finally won 7-5.
"It/s hard to tell," at this point how good his relatively inexperienced squad is, said St. John. "We start a week earlier than baseball, so it/s hard to get the doubles teams set," early.
"Dos Pueblos has a good team," said St. John. "They compete in that Channel League, with Santa Barbara and Ventura. That/s a good boys tennis league.
"Dos Pueblos/ No. 1 player is a good player," said St. John as he was watching the Chargers/ Alex Edstrom win his sets 6-1, 6-0, 6-0.
Righetti plays at 2 p.m. at Paso Robles today in a PAC-5 match.
