ARROYO GRANDE 7 Santa Barbara pitcher Freddy Vasquez fanned 11 batters to lead the Dons to a 6-3 win over Arroyo Grande Thursday in a Central Coast Preseason Tournament game at P.O.V.E. Field.
Vasquez pitched all seven innings, threw 118 total pitches and held the Eagles to four hits with two walks.
"Their pitcher did a good job spotting his curve ball and kept us off balance," said Eagles/ coach Brad Lachemann.
Santa Barbara (2-0) capitalized on Arroyo Grande/s early season mistakes. The Eagles made four costly errors and Arroyo Grande/s starting pitcher, Wade Morrison, hit three batters.
"This was a good test," said Lachemann. "It/s good for our guys to know where they/re at because they need to do some work."
The Dons scored twice in the first inning. Chance McCullough doubled to score Marcus Mokales and McCullough scored when Eagles/ Chris McCall overthrew third base after a dropped third strike.
In the second inning, Kevin Dunn hit a double and scored when a throw from right field skidded past Jason Harris at third base. Mokales/ single scored Jeff Allen who was hit by a pitch to get on base.
"We gave them enough runs to beat us and they didn/t give us anything," said Lachemann. "When you spot a team like this that many runs you/re going to have problems unless you go swing and we didn/t go swing today."
The Eagles (2-1) kept the game close early as Arroyo Grande/s Harris singled and was brought home by Gil Buenrostro/s sacrifice in the first inning. Brandon King hit a double and Harris brought him and Jason Wysong (walk) home with a hard-grounder up the middle in the second.
But that was it for the Eagles. Vasquez struck out three hitters 7 Buenrostro, Morrison and King 7 in a row in the third and rode that momentum to the end.
"The big turnaround was the third inning when he struck out three big hitters," said Santa Barbara coach Mike Cooney. "We know these guys. They/re good hitters. You can/t come at them with fast balls … . That/s all you can do is try to be one step ahead of them."
