AHC beats Cuesta in 10th

SAN LUIS OBISPO 7 Jimmy Van Ostrand/s two-run single in the top of the 10th inning gave Hancock College/s baseball team the go-ahead runs in an important 3-1 Western State Conference win over Cuesta on Saturday.

Van Ostrand, signed to attend Cal Poly next season, cracked a one-out single off reliever Matt Bowman to score Mike Terrones and Jacob Roe to break a 1-1 tie held over from the second inning.

Andrew Jones picked up the win in relief for the Bulldogs (2-0, 5-3) while Todd Nelson came on to pick up the save for Hancock. Bowman suffered the loss to drop to 0-1 on the year.

Hancock opened the scoring in the second inning with an RBI single by Adam Cole, scoring Jason Carlson; Hancock then gave up the lead in the bottom half of the inning when starter Jeremiah Ventresca balked home Jherell Miller.

Ventresca allowed the one run on 10 hits over seven innings, striking out four and walking three; Jones allowed one hit over two innings for the victory.

Carlson and Cole were each 2-for-5 in the victory, while Jimmy Gardiner was 3-for-6 in the loss for Cuesta (0-2, 2-6). Dustin Kelly added two hits for Cuesta.

Cuesta outhit Hancock 12-9, but left 15 runners on base, including leaving the bases loaded twice, including the 10th inning.

Saturday/s win was the second straight for the Bulldogs over the Cougars after having dropped 13 straight to Cuesta since 2000. It also marked Cuesta/s fifth straight loss.

Hancock hosts Ventura in WSC action on Tuesday.

Cal Poly 13, Nevada 9

RENO, Nev. 7 Bret Berglund clubbed a three-run homer to lead the Mustangs (16-7-1) as they came back from an early 5-0 deficit for a non-conference victory over the Wolfpack (6-8).

Berglund was 3-for-5 with four RBIs in the victory, in which Cal Poly had 22 hits. His homer in the sixth inning followed a seven-run third inning that erased the five-run deficit.

Berglund, Matt Guiliano, Brandon Roberts, Billy Saul and Josh Mayo had three hits each.

Jonathan Fleming improved to 4-0 on the season despite allowing six runs in five innings of work. Dennis LeDuc worked the final 1 1/3 innings for his third save of the year.

The series concludes today at 1 p.m.
