St. Joe’s Frankie Eszes makes quick work of her opponents for the LPL singles title
St. Joseph junior Frankie Eszes said she felt some pressure during the Los Padres League Tennis Tournament Friday.
She didn't play as though she did.
The top seed roared to the singles title. Eszes blanked second-ranked Megan Hansen of Morro Bay 8-0 in a pro set in the championship match at Hancock College. Eszes dropped all of four games total in her four matches.
"When you're seeded, you feel some pressure," Eszes said afterward.
"I just decided to enjoy myself today, though, and I had a lot of fun. I felt like I used a variety of shots on my points, and that really helped me today."
Santa Maria High School hosted the tournament, which took place at Hancock and the Minami Center. All semifinals and finals were at Hancock.
Singles and doubles finalists qualified for the CIF Southern Section Individual Tournament. Third-place finishers are alternates.
The automatic league finalists for the sectional team tournament were set before Friday. Those included co-league champions St. Joseph and Santa Ynez, third-place Cabrillo and fourth-place Templeton.
Eszes was a surprise finalist in the LPL tournament last year. Top-ranked senior teammate Ane McPike beat her in a tight match to win a third consecutive LPL singles title. Eszes lost just one league singles match this season.
The player that saddled her with that one loss, Emily Ineman, won the league doubles title with Alisa Silsbee Friday. The Santa Ynez pair upset top-ranked Sammy White and Ellie McPike of St. Joseph 6-2, 6-2 in the championship match.
White and McPike rolled through the regular season unbeaten in LPL matches.
Julie Leyva of third-place Cabrillo defeated teammate Ashley Pennewell 8-3 in the third-place singles match. Sophie Brandstatter and Sydney Tack of Santa Ynez edged teammates Bianca Capasso and Kylie Petersen 9-8 (4) in a tiebreaker in the third-place doubles match.
Ineman and Silsbee didn't have much experience playing together. They showed Friday that they didn't need much.
For starters, "We played a lot of doubles the last two years," though with different partners, said Silsbee.
"We've gotten a lot better over the last two years."
The pair's experience as a doubles team consisted of a match against Morro Bay this year. Still, the pair had a lot of good chemistry even before competition started Friday.
They're teammates on Santa Ynez's powerful girls soccer team. They're also friends. "When you're playing with a good friend, it's easy," said Ineman. "You pick each other up."
Silsbee did a lot of damage with her groundstrokes Friday. Ineman did a lot of damage at the net.
During the title match against White and McPike, "We moved them around with our shots and made them hit the ball to our net person," said Ineman. The strategy worked.
Pairings for the CIF Southern Section team playoffs will come out Monday.
